There were strong climbers in each bunch and the competition promised to be fierce. Winners from the previous two years Paul Ingwersen (scr) and Stephen Damm (2:30) were present to try and get their names on the trophy for a second time and Lisa Barry added some quality hill climbing credentials to an already strong field. The limit group with a 9 minute advantage over scratch looked hard to beat on the short 21km course but anything could happen on long uphill run to the finish. Scratch worked well from the start as did the limit and the 5 min group. The likely winners looked like coming from this bunch as the block group containing Lisa Barry and Stephen Damm began to splinter within the first 6km. By the time riders hit the final 8k dirt section all groups except scratch were splintered and it was Stephen mowing down all the front markers while trying not to get caught by the remnants of the scratch bunch (Andy Kaye, Declan Gregory and Ryan Allen). In the end Damm sprinted over Robbie Storey (St Kilda CC) in the last 200m to win with Rob Belsher 3rd. The course makes its way down to the weir, follows Lake Road and then heads up into the next valley across. From here the route turns off onto the gravel Sirls Rd and the race finishes at the very top of the range.

Afraid of riding on gravel? Don’t be. The course has been given a thumbs up by all those who have raced the course. In fact one rider even suggested that the dirt section was smoother then the ride out from Albury to the Weir. The dirt section for the Dirtberg race measures exactly 8.58kms with 291 metres of ascent. The final 500 metre pinch is the worst with a max incline of 14.1 %. Our tip is to reset your speedo as you hit the dirt and if you are in the mix at 8kms bury yourself.....

If you fancy yourself on Saturday there are 2 schools of thought:

a) Breakaway early and get onto the dirt first. As the road weaves a lot a lone breakaway could easily get out of sight and out of mind.

b) If you have Philippe Gilbert like acceleration and enjoy a bunch kick it will be all or nothing in the final 500 metres - only the strong will win from here.

The handicapper gave a generous 12 minute start to newcomer Steve Prskalo and David Hutchinson who has now got a couple of races experience. They had a 4:30 start on the second limit of Mick Coles, Grant Pollard and Pat North. This bunch was always going to be an interesting test of youth working with experience, and they proved no match for the strong block bunch of eventual podium of Bob Bright, Callum Dwyer, Roger Derrick, Charly McMillan and Zach Drury. The block bunch motored out towards Indigo Valley road, making the most of the tailwind, easily catching second limit but only putting a small dent into the limit lead. At the turn they lost first Grant Pollard, then Pat North to punctures, and they would need to work at a consistent rate to get up.

The scratch bunch of Ryan Allen, Steve Fraser, Jon Styles, Declan Gregory and Brendan Washington was swapping turns, but chasing with a tailwind, and ridings feeling the pressure and missing turns meant that at the turnaround the had only pulled back 1 minute of the 3:30 start given to block. At this point the race was looking a really possibility for the limit markers, however a dropped chain for David Hutchinson saw the two riders separated and riding solo for the 12km back into a headwind gave the block bunch the sniff of victory, and as the race approached Billy’s Hill, the combined block and second limit bunch had the front markers well and truly in sight, as their minds turned to how to manage the sprint finish.

Scratch continued to ride, but with the gap clearly to big to bridge, Washo hit the bunch looking for fastest time.

At the front of the race, Bob Bright comfortably took out the win, from Callum, and Roger Derrick. The limit riders followed half a minute later, and a further minute on, Washo took out fastest time, with a good 500m gap to Jon Styles who was best of the rest from scratch.

There was only 5 minutes between fastest and slowest rider and the top three positions were within 30 seconds of each other. Charly McMillan had fastest time. Kudos has to go to John Styles for finishing second on a road bike without aerobars - we'd better keep an eye on him!
